Is any one really taking this Thompson guy as a real candidate?

while im no big fan of thompson, i think you do a a bit of a disservice by combining the facts and the fiction of the nazi role..

while most of us are smart enough to see it for what it is, im sure some wingnut will accuse you of making connections by association.. and we all know that that is only ok when the (p)resident does it..

i'd humbly suggest an edit to drop the fiction..

Knocking up his girlfriend, marrying her, letting her put him through school, dumping her, marrying his trophy wife are real. The Nazi business is from a role Thompson played in the TV series, "Wiseguy."

It says right there its fiction.

my point was that the addition of fiction carries no weight and only detracts from the facts..

why include it at all?

it is your seed, so make it what you will..

Chindi, I take tschreck's point, and at the risk of putting words in his mouth, I suspect what he's having a problem with is the inclusion of the fictional stuff in your summary. Readers won't recognize that the Nazi business is fiction until they launch the actual article.

To be journalistically fair, the Nazi business needs to be taken out of the summary unless the admission that its fiction is included there too.

It was but I still removed it.
Here is the original which included it:

Fred Thompson knocked up his girlfriend and married her so that she could put him through college. Then, in 1985 he divorced her. Then, around 1987, he was filmed participating in white supremacist rallies and receiving a prized possession — a first edition of "Mein Kampf" autographed by Adolph Hitler.

Later he married the very white, very blonde, and very Aryan, Jeri Kehn, who is 25 years younger than Thompson.

Knocking up his girlfriend, marrying her, letting her put him through school, dumping her, marrying his trophy wife are real. The Nazi business is from a role Thompson played in the TV series, "Wiseguy."

Wouldn't it avoid confusion if people would just read the article... you know... like they're supposed to?

Amazing, but I agree with tschreck here. The inclusion of any references to Nazis or Nazism was quite uncalled for here and demonstrates a clear agenda.

Apparently the bush backers are having a love fest right now on this very subject. He is very appealing to them because he hasn't really said anything yet as opposed to the rest of the candidates.

Yeah, kinda like when McCain was accused of fathering a black child just prior to the South Carolina primary back in 2000. Very Stalinist.

ROTFLMAO. The nutsrooter who wrote that crap can't even get the picture right much less much of anything else. That's not Jeri Thompson but rather country singer Lorrie Morgan who Fred once dated. Hilarious.

    Yep, Lorrie Morgan!

That whole article is, honestly, one of the dumbest things I've ever read. If I were a serious liberal, I would actually wonder if that Google article was a plant to try and make those on the left look dumb.

Love Thompson or hate him, it matters not to me. But, if anyone thinks they are going to sink his campaign by running clips of him ACTING, then they are terribly - and hilariously - mistaken. And, the whole "Aryan" wife thing is a hoot!

Thanks for the laugh, Chindi! :-D

Re the "Nazi" business: If Thompson has a grain of sense, he'll come right back at that sort of attack and argue that by dramatizing the dangers of Naziism and Nazi ideology he was in fact using his "artistic skills" to make a powerful anti-Nazi statement. Attacking him for playing a Nazi in a professional role is like calling Steven Spielberg a Nazi sympathizer for depicting Nazi atrocities so powerfully in Schindler's List. (Don't laugh, there were some at the time the movie came out who seriously questioned the morality of putting such things on screen in an artistic context). So this will be an interesting test of Thompson's intelligence and quickness to respond. The fatal weakness of the last two Democratic candidates has been their failure to confront the smears against them directly, and instead taking the "high road" while Rove's lie-machine spread their fabricated nonsense all over the place. If Thompson handles this well, my opinion of him may improve. If not -- well, call it Darwinian selection.

The accusations about his shotgun marriage, divorce, trophy wife and string of Hollywood girlfriends may be more of a problem. But then again, the Republicans elected and later canonized and worshiped the first divorced President in American history; embraced as a champion of "family values" a speaker of the house who was known to have abandoned his seriously ill wife for a younger mistress, pretended not to know that Mark Foley was a gay chickenhawk as long as he made righteous noises about fighting pedophiles who used the Internet to troll for victims, and on and on and on. We should all clearly understand by now that championing "family values" does not, to a Republican, have anything to do with living by them. It has to do only with blaming all "moral decline" on Democrats.

The original article upsets me. What is the purpose? To stir up hate against a person for no real reason? Be opposed to his policies or his ideas, not manufactured reasons. The worst part of all is if that campiagn were run, there would be people who would vote based on it.

The author of the original article must not be confident in his/her candidate.

Fred Thompson married Sarah Elizabeth Lindsey in September 1959, at the age of 17. Fred and Sarah Thompson divorced in 1985, 26 years later. 17 years later, on June 29, 2002, Thompson married Republican consultant Jeri Kehn.

I would be curious to know how much more of the information is skewed in that article. Not that he isn't a racist, bigot, white supremacist, but I am pretty sure the fact he remarried a younger woman with blond hair and fake boobs and portrayed a white supremacist in a television show aren't true defining factors. I guess we are all leprechauns because at some point in our lives we all have worn green?
